Allen was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer about 6 months ago. At first, Allen did not receive surgical treatment. However, when it was not possible to cope with the side effects of the medications, the most logical way was to evaluate the surgical treatment option. Allen, who underwent right radical nephrectomy in June 2012, was shaken by the news that cancer metastasized to his lung. But he did not ever give up. He was decisive in fighting and beating kidney cancer.
His doctor told Allen that he suspects it might be kidney cancer. Thereupon, a series of tests were performed to find out whether this mass was cancerous or not.
And at the end of that day, the doctor gave Allen the news that deeply shook him. Allen was a stage 4 kidney cancer patient from then on.
2. Critical for Himself and His Family
When asked if he had any known kidney cancer cases in his family, Allen’s answer was no. Although he wondered why he had kidney cancer and cannot find any cause, with the support of his family, friends and medical care team, Allen quickly recovered from the strangulated affect of diagnosis of cancer.
that the most important thing he had to do was to think calmly and to make the
right choice of treatment, which was critical for both himself and his family.
Allen decided to take a new generation of chemotherapy medications before surgical treatment, after consultation with both his medical care team, doctors, family, and friends.
He entered the treatment process with targeted therapies called new generation chemotherapy drugs. These new generation drugs, called targeted therapy, show their ability to treat with effecting only cancer cells. Since they only affect kidney cancer cells and have minimal effects on other cells of the body, their side effects are also minimal.
3. Treatment Interrupted by Side Effects
However, targeted therapy has not yet developed to be completely free of side effects in every patient. That’s exactly what Allen lived.
She could not continue her treatment due to side effects of the drugs. Sores developed under his feet and in his mouth as a result of side effects. Also, she was feeling as he had very low energy.
After discussing this with his doctor, Allen decided that surgical treatment would be a better option than the targeted therapy. After all of these, Allen stopped taking the drugs and went through a radical right nephrectomy surgery.
4. Adventure of Surgical Treatment
Allen received another bad news, as he thought he was beating the kidney cancer by right nephrectomy. His doctor told him that kidney cancer metastasized to his lung. After a series of tests and investigations, Allen was told to undergo lobectomy to get rid of the metastasis in his lung. Once again, Allen managed to remain calm and make his decision. With the support and prayers of his family and friends, he managed to survive from lung metastasis by lobectomy.
Allen, who had undergone lobectomy about 3 and a half years ago, has been living cancer-free ever since.
5. Beating the Kidney Cancer
suggested that patients with kidney cancer should keep all records, just like
him. He said that he kept all his information, CD records of BT and PT scans
and doctor’s notes in three large ring folders.
He also said that the support of family and friends is very important for beating the kidney cancer.
He added that second opinions in the treatment process were of great importance and that every patient with kidney cancer should seek a kidney cancer specialist for the second opinion.
surgeon told him that everything was fine. Therewith, just to be sure, he went
to another doctor to get a second opinion and he learned that his kidney cancer
metastasized to his lung.
Lastly, Allen advised kidney cancer patients to stay active, and saying “Attitude is everything!”.
